Tokyo on Monday confirmed 22,387 new cases of novel coronavirus infection, the metropolitan government said. The figure is about 80% higher than the 12,696 new cases confirmed a week ago, and has exceeded 20,000 for six straight days.

For the entire nation, new cases topped 80,000, a record-high for Monday, according to a Yomiuri Shimbun tally. The previous high was 76,180 cases a week ago.

The Osaka prefectural government reported that 7,785 new cases were confirmed on Monday, up by 2,926 from a week earlier.
